 By RayJaun Stelly, The Seattle Medium Father’s and Son’s Together (FAST) held their annual barbershop event last Saturday, designed to raise awareness of the impact of gun violence in the community. The event featured eight barbers and braiders who provided free haircuts, lunch, and a host of activities for kids at the Rainier Beach Community Center.
For weeks, people eligible for the vaccine have been frustrated by the scarcity of available shots. Now there are hundreds of open spots. What happened?

 | Meet Larry Wilmore, an African American father, husband, a concerned member of his community, an avid sports fan, and a visionary. He is happily married to the love of his life for 30 years with two amazing sons and the Founder/CEO of Fathers and Sons Together (FAST). FAST is a grassroots 501©3 non-profit organization established in 2011, designed to strengthen the relationships between fathers and sons, especially with African American males and other people of color. FAST participants engage in unique activities and programs designed to build and connect them with other fathers and sons. To date, FAST has served over 1,000+ people. “Being Black in America” is a short film based on a poem by 14-year-old Lincoln Wilmore. Originally written last year, the poem counters racist stereotypes with positive affirmations and messages for Black youth, ending on a revolutionary high note with footage from the We Want To Live rally on June 7.
In the film, Wilmore gazes confidently at the camera as he begins, “Being Black in America, you’re often looked at differently when they [sic] meet. Not for the content of your character, but still by the color of your skin. Being Black in America means you’re athletic, not academic. Certainly a rapper, entertainer, or maybe even a thug, born and raised in the hood or the streets or on them drugs.”
He goes on to say, “These are all stereotypes, because certainly we are much more than that. Being African American means you are amazing. You are smart, strong, creative, geniuses, inventors, and kind, full of an undeniable resilience, strength, and wisdom.”

After a busy Mother’s Day on Sunday, Alicia Dassa had already gone to bed when her husband asked their 18-year-old son to move their car to a spot that had opened in front of their house on 51st Avenue South in Seattle’s Rainier Beach neighborhood.
She heard gunshots.
“That’s normal around here,” Dassa said of her neighborhood. “I didn’t even get out of bed.”
